International Ag Insurance Solutions issued the following announcement on Sept. 27.

President Trump says bilateral trade talks are about to begin with another major country. “We’ve agreed today to start trade negotiations between the United States and Japan.”

The President told reporters Wednesday the two counties with 30% of the world’s gross domestic product will enter into negotiations for an agreement on goods and services that can produce early achievements. “This was something that for various reasons over the years, Japan was unwilling to do and now, they are willing to do, so we’re very happy about that and I’m sure they will come to a satisfactory conclusion.”

Trump says the new trade agreement will increase market access for U.S. ag, fish, and forestry products in Japan and bring more automotive manufacturing to the U.S.

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says it’s welcome news since export income is critical to the financial health of agriculture and he looks forward to the great potential the breakthrough represents.

Trump says he and Japan’s Prime Minister have affirmed the importance of a strong, stable, and beneficial trade and economic relationship between the two countries and that talks will begin after “necessary domestic procedures” have been completed. Trump pulled the U.S. out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership which includes Japan, shortly after he took office.
