NATIONAL FARMERS: Dairy Together Roadshow - Platteville, Wisconsin

National Farmers issued the following announcement on April 5.

Earlier today, more than 65 farmers gathered to address solutions to the dairy economic crisis.

National Farmers Board Member Jim Hayes, himself a farmer, welcomed producers to the solution-focused gathering. Dr. Richard Levins, ag economist, made serious points about the ripple effect of dairy concerns, among them negative impacts on food security and the environment. And local rural economies would face reduced vitality because of fewer farms patronizing local business.

National Farmers proposed a Family Dairy Farm Relief Act, which would be a temporary measure. Levins said it is a short-term solution. National Farmers also proposed a structure management program. Information about both proposals is here: https://www.nfo.org/Dairy/Family-Dairy-Farmer-Relief.aspx

Wisconsin Farmers Union speakers reviewed a study it commissioned to analyze proposed solutions to the problems farmers are facing if each had been implemented with the 2014 Farm Bill. The analysis ran projections through 2020.

1. Dairy Price Stabilization Plan that operates continually

2. Dairy Price Stabilization Plan that operates when triggered by a milk:feed ratio

3. Margin Protection Program as originally designed

4.Baseline Scenario, which is projections with the current federal dairy program

Both versions of the DPSP show notable dairy economic improvements. For details go to https://dairyproposals2018.com/view-proposals/proposals/proposal_3.pdf
